Bluegrass Care Navigators Provides Comfort and Peace Beyond the Final Days

May 9, 2025

When Robin Moss and her family welcomed her in-laws into their home, they knew it would be a journey of love, patience, and challenges. But when her father-in-law Teddy’s health declined due to a cancer diagnosis, Robin quickly realized they needed extra support and turned to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN).

"People often assume that calling hospice means death is imminent, which leads many to wait too long,” Robin said. “The reality is that hospice provides valuable comfort and support for both the patient and their loved ones throughout the process. It's important to call sooner to benefit from the care and peace it offers."

From the moment hospice stepped in, Robin felt relief. The team expertly managed Teddy’s symptoms and effectively controlled his pain, allowing him to achieve his goal of a good quality of life at home. The team also supported her as a caregiver, providing resources and education to help her feel competent and supported.

“Teddy’s pain became too much, and I didn’t know what to do,” she recalled. “I called, and a nurse came right away—she showed me a better way to manage his medication, and from that point on, he was comfortable.”

The team anticipated their needs, often before Robin even had to ask. Whether it was equipment like a Hoyer lift delivered within hours or a compassionate voice on the phone in the middle of the night, she knew she wasn’t alone.

“They never made me feel bad for not knowing things and educated and encouraged me,” Robin said. “They walked me through everything—how to manage medications and his anxiety. They weren’t just there for Teddy. They were there for me, too.”

When Teddy passed in October, the hospice team continued their support, ensuring a smooth transition for the family, walking with her through the grieving process and offering practical support with the necessary paperwork to close his estate.

“People don’t realize hospice isn’t just for the final days,” Robin shared. “It brings comfort, dignity, and peace—both for your loved one and for you.”

Marla Sowers was never defined by titles though she held many. A pianist and Miss Morehead State University, a valedictorian, a beautiful singer, and an excellent writer, she carried the practical wisdom of her farming family into everything she did. As a public school elementary music teacher, Marla shaped hearts by inviting students to see kindness as strength. When a dementia diagnosis altered the rhythm of her days, her husband Richard cared for her at home and then with the help of an assisted living facility for as long as he could. After several years, the facility referred her to Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN) for hospice services.

Hi. I'm Callie. Most days, my job is simple: walk into rooms with my human, Mary, wag my tail, and let people know they’re not alone. I’ve been doing this therapy dog work with her for a while now, and I take it very seriously, even if I’m small and fluffy.

As a Support Center RN, I’ve witnessed many moments of compassion, but few have touched me as deeply as the call I received from a patient’s wife in our Pikeville region. She shared how our nurse, Tiffany Little (RN), provided care with such warmth and dedication that her presence brought genuine comfort and support to their lives.

Team BCN brought compassionate, personalized care to Tim and Helen Hoffstedder during a challenging chapter in their lives. After receiving a dementia diagnosis almost seven years ago, Helen’s family did their best to care for her at home. When she required additional support, they moved her to ColdSpring Transitional Care where she could receive high-quality care around the clock. In February 2024, she began retaining fluid and had difficulty breathing. The team at ColdSpring Care referred the family to Bluegrass Hospice Care and that extra support brought her husband Tim immense reassurance.
