Recently, I was asked to make an urgent music therapy visit for end of life. When I arrived, I observed the patient moving restlessly in their bed and attempting to remove their clothing. At the time of my visit, the patient was alone, but thanks to the information from the referring team member, I knew that the patient was a musician herself and playing for her church community was a big part of her life.
I was able to provide relaxing instrumental music, as well as sing and play several hymns. As the visit progressed the patient appeared to become more relaxed and comfortable, especially in response to the hymn “It is Well with My Soul.” By the time I concluded my visit, the patient was resting with her eyes closed and exhibited minimal restless movements. While it is helpful to work with patients who can verbalize their music preferences, that is not a requirement for music therapy. I am grateful to the Bluegrass Care Navigator team member who was able to provide music preferences on behalf of the patient so I could address the end-of-life restlessness as successfully as possible.
