“I like working for BCN because of the community feeling,” she said. “I consider the people I work with to be my work family. I think this is because I work so closely with so many people on so many different tasks, and we all get along very well. We all support each other because we all have the same goal in mind: to provide the best care possible to our patients and families.”
Rolf’s field experience allows her to set new team members up for success from day one by preparing the training curriculum and creating the onboarding schedule. She trains new staff on how to properly document in the electronic medical records (EMR) system, how to set up their IT equipment, access their email, use Zoom and Microsoft Teams, and get the most from BCN’s intranet.
She and her fellow clinical educators stay up to date on any Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) changes. The team works closely with professional development and other departments to cascade that information to others in the field who need it for ongoing education.
As part of the orientation process, new team members do ride alongs and interviews with other clinical disciplines, including social workers, chaplains, CNAs and nurses. This allows new team members to see what a typical day looks like and better understand the scope of BCN and their roles within it. Rolf loves that “lightbulb” moment with team members as new topics and procedures begin to make sense.
“There is no better feeling than knowing that I helped a new hire to find their passion and continue to learn and grow as a clinician and a person,” she said. “Also, I know that the time and effort that I put into training our new hires gets carried forward to our patients and families and that results in better care.”
Rolf especially appreciates BCN’s core value of teamwork and the interdisciplinary group that works together to offer holistic patient-centered care.
“When you’re out in the field, teamwork is so important because you have to remember you’re not alone, you always have other folks to help you, whether that’s other nurses, CNAs, social workers or chaplains,” she said. “From my experience in the field as a nurse, sometimes it’s important to take a step back and think it might not be a physical problem, it might be something social or spiritual. Everyone is just a phone call away.”
