In her first 11th hour experience, she sat with a patient at the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard. When she arrived, the patient was unresponsive, but comfortable. As Jill spoke softly, expressing her gratitude for his service, she noticed that his hand moved toward her voice. Without hesitation, she asked if she could hold his hand. As he relaxed his hand into hers, a palpable sense of peace filled the room.
“It was such a touching moment for me, and it was one of the great honors of my life to sit with that man,” she said.
Jill sat with the patient until his family arrived. With tears in his eyes, the son thanked her for sitting with his dad. Both the son and his wife shared the peace they felt while driving, knowing that their loved one wasn’t alone.
“I hope others will consider volunteering their time or their resources to support the work we are doing to help make such an important difference for future patients of Bluegrass Care Navigators,” Jill said.
