11th Hour Volunteer Provides Vital Support for Patients and Caregivers

Vicky Schriml volunteers at the 11th hour because she believes that no patient should pass alone. In this role, Vicky offers comforting companionship to patients in our Lexington region who are in their final moments, providing additional support to the patient and family.

One evening, Vicky received a call to sit with the husband of a Bluegrass Care Navigators’ patient who couldn’t bear to be alone as his wife passed. The moment gave her pause, as she had been calling this family for weeks during her Thursday care calls to make sure the couple had the supplies they needed for the weekend.

When Vicky arrived, the man recognized her voice immediately and said, “I know you.” It was a powerful experience for Vicky, as it highlighted what she loves most about her role as an 11th-hour volunteer—the opportunity to care for both the patient and their caregiver.

“This moment made me realize how deeply connected all of our efforts are,” she said. “Everything we do is important, whether it be volunteering at the 11th hour, making care calls, writing anniversary notes or working administratively, everything works together to provide extra support for our families.”

Bluegrass Care Navigators is committed to providing expert care with compassion. Our team of clinicians and volunteers work together to ensure that each person receives the care they would want for their own family members. Your generosity today will help us continue to serve friends and neighbors in our communities and ensure that no one passes alone.
