11th Hour Volunteer Offers Patient the Gift of Comfort and Advocacy
After serving as a chaplain in the Cynthiana region at Bluegrass Care Navigators for 13 years, Rick Snyder chose to become an 11th hour volunteer in retirement. In this role, Rick gives back to his community by offering comfort to patients in their final moments, especially those without family nearby.

For Rick, the greatest gift of volunteering is the privilege of being invited into someone’s life during such a critical time to provide comfort, dignity, and a reminder that each person is known and loved. Recently, Rick provided the gift of presence and advocacy to a patient in their final moments.
When Rick entered the hospital room, the patient was slumped in bed, moaning, and looked uncomfortable. When the hospital staff came to do vitals and personal care, Rick asked if the patient could be repositioned more comfortably. Afterwards, the patient seemed more relaxed and at peace.
In this situation, Rick knew the patient’s denominational background, so he was able to incorporate appropriate prayers and scripture readings from the patient’s tradition, along with gentle touch.
“At the end of my vigil with the patient, they were resting very peacefully,” he said. “It was very satisfying to see how the whole team had worked together to bring peace and comfort.”
