11th Hour Volunteer Provides the Gift of Family
After Julie’s parents passed when she was a teenager, she grieved for years. Twenty years ago, she saw a newspaper ad asking for volunteers at Bluegrass Care Navigators and felt compelled to help others in ways she hadn’t been able to provide for her own parents. Now, as an 11th hour volunteer in our Northern Kentucky region, Julie provides a comforting presence to patients in their final moments without family nearby.

It's a calling,” she said. “It’s such a sacred gift that the Divine has entrusted me with being present with people who are on the threshold, and I can’t say no to that.”
One of her most memorable 11th-hour experiences was with a Catholic gentleman. After she had introduced herself, Julie sat by his side, offering words of comfort and singing "You Are My Sunshine." Since she knew the patient’s religious preferences, she was able to offer appropriate prayers and a comforting touch. As his breathing grew irregular, she gently reassured him, reminding him that he was loved and safe in God's embrace. Within minutes, he passed away peacefully.
Although Julie volunteered to provide compassion to others, through her sacrificial service, she found healing, both for herself and the patients and families she supports.
“Volunteering is the best thing I’ve done because I feel like I’ve honored my parents by being with other people’s parents at their time of need,” she said.
