Just shy of two years ago when I started working for Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN), one of the first things I noticed is how much families enjoy learning new ways to help their loved one through massage. A lot of family members like to work side-by-side with me, learning new techniques to use between visits. It became clear early on that having these new massage tools was very valuable to these families.
Another thing that started early on was my interest in working with respiratory issues. I had experience with COPD, emphysema, etc., but had much more to learn about their progression. Through some trial and error, and invaluable patient feedback, I’ve been able to develop a new protocol for easing respiration.
I see a gentleman for two goals that I especially appreciate working on: family support and improving patient respiration. This patient has a particularly good response to gentle massage of all the muscles that help him breathe. I still remember his face that was full of surprise after our first treatment when he felt his shortness of breath ease and felt his ribs have a smoother motion. During every session, his wife watches these techniques closely and puts them into practice between our sessions, which they both love. It is so rewarding to watch his wife's confidence grow as she learns new skills to ease his specific symptoms.
