BCN Career Stories

Claudette Wickers

My "Why" for going into nursing was to be a Nurse Midwife. I only wanted to work as a Labor and Delivery nurse, then go back to school to get my degree in Midwifery. Then I found a job as a Psychiatric nurse and thought... hey, this is not so bad, and I loved that job and the experience I gained. While working on my BSN, our community nursing class required us to follow a nurse that works in the community. I thought I would follow a Hospice nurse. Little did I know, I would find my calling.

I remember following a hospice nurse and I was amazed by the care and compassion she showed to families and patients. I was in awe of the collaboration with team members, the autonomy they had and the flexibility. I thought, I would not mind being a hospice nurse and working in homes.

At that time, jobs were never available in the Frankfort office. I tried several times when something would come up, but at the time, did not have enough experience. I did not give up, as my goal was to be a hospice nurse.

I ultimately left psychiatric nursing, did some Home Health, got experience and reapplied. I remember my interview and just wanting someone to give me a chance. In 2015, I was hired as an on call nurse. One of the great things about this working at BCN is the ability to grow and transition into other roles. I later transitioned to a case manager position, where I would work with a team, and would provide care, support and symptom management to families. I then transitioned to a Hospital Liaison role, where I was able to educate families on hospice services, assist and getting the set up for hospice care at home, as well as provide care for those not well enough to make it home and I would advocate for symptom management at the hospital. I recently have transitioned to the Nursing Supervisor position for the Frankfort office and am honored for this new role.

I can honestly say that working for Bluegrass Care Navigators is the best company I have ever worked for. We have a very supportive culture here and our office is very family oriented. Our leadership value their employees and strive to make this the best place to work.

The work we do is very important. When you get to walk along with a special group of people with the same goal in mind – to provide a patient and family with care and compassion at the scariest time of their life.

I believe that everyone has a calling. I began my nursing career with the thought that I was meant to be a Midwife, and be at the beginning of life. However, my calling is being a hospice nurse and supporting those at the end of life. And working at BCN, I am home and I am where I am supposed to be.
