My last patients were a husband and wife who live together in the same room. The wife did not require the same degree of care as her husband but chose to stay there with him so they could be together. Upon my arrival, the wife was immediately thrilled. She said she had been depressed lately about feeling socially isolated in her current environment. She had also been experiencing physical pain in her legs from a fall several weeks prior.
While I gently massaged her legs and feet, I could see the stress melt away from her. She told me about an old Boggle buddy of hers (whom she had never met in person) who had contacted her earlier that day to tell her to remember to be grateful for the little moments of joy throughout her day. She expressed such immense gratitude for the small service I had provided her and said, “You are my angel today.” I think she was mine, too. I left her with my heart full and grateful for the opportunity to provide her with some comfort. I try to remember these kinds of moments whenever possible so that, whenever my cup feels empty, I can always refill it with love.
Massage therapy is part of the integrative medicine program at Bluegrass Care Navigators and is generously supported by donors. Many patients who have felt isolated have found hope because of this therapy. Massage therapy touches the hearts and souls of individuals, who have discovered newfound strength and resilience through the power of touch.
Our Integrative Medicine program is entirely funded through private support, including grants and philanthropic donations. No BCN patient is ever turned away from receiving Integrative Medicine therapies due to their insurance status, and there is no charge to the patient for these services. Without the dedication and care made possible through the generosity of donors patients would not have enjoyed the same quality of life or dignity in navigating their end-of-life journeys.
